Born in 1832, the Distillery District was founded by William Gooderham and James Worts. Little did they know that this area would become the largest distillery in the British Empire. Today, the District has been redeveloped into a chic area of Toronto; home to intriguing art galleries, fabulous restaurants, trendy boutiques and cool cafes. Its Victorian style makes it a popular film location for movies such as Chicago and X-Men.The Mill Street Brewery is a District highlight, a classic tie-back to the neighbourhood’s history. Take a tour and have a taste during regular hours of operation.
Art Galleries
The varied and unique art galleries in the Distillery district display Canadian and international artists. These include Brush Gallery, and the Gibsone Jessop Gallery, just two of the dozen in the District.
Restaurants
And no district would be complete without food! The Boiler House is one to try.Located in a raw brick open loft space, the Boiler House is famous for its spectacular ceilings, and its grilled steak and seafood cuisine.For something a bit more intimate, try Perigee. Want to see the menu? Too bad there isn’t one. Perigee asks patrons to trust the chefs who prepare a new dish every night.
Shopping
The Distillery district offers a range of unique and inventive retailers to find those one-of-a-kind items. There are numerous fashion retailers, such as Lileo, for designer items. There are a plethora of gift boutiques and art shoppes selling original designs. Car lovers in particular will enjoy a visit to AutoGrotto, which showcases memorabilia from automotive history and classic model cars. Everything from home décor to fashion, it’s a store for every car lover. At the end of the day, step into Balzac’s for a gourmet coffee in a warm and cozy environment.
Location
Located just south of Parliament and Mill Streets, the Distillery District is easily accessible by public transit and ample parking is readily available. For festival enthusiasts, the District has a packed schedule during the summer. Open year-round, the Distillery District is certainly worth a trip. Google Map
